Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

✓ Core Courses Requirement: You must have passed all core courses before starting the BTR.

How many ECTS credits do you have?

🎓 150+ ECTS

I have completed 150 or more credits

📚 145-149 ECTS

I have between 145 and 149 credits

⚠️ Below 145 ECTS

I have fewer than 145 credits

A student needs at least 145 ECTS, of which maximally 12.5 ECTS and a Project Period may be under grading.

Important: Make sure to discuss your BTR plans during your academic advising sessions.

Step 2: Finding Your Research Supervisor

⚠️ Your Responsibility: Finding a BTR project is your own responsibility. The BTR Office cannot directly assist individuals in finding projects to ensure an equal playing field for all students. You must proactively reach out to relevant institutions, research groups, and potential supervisors in your field of interest to explore available opportunities.

Here are some ways to find potential projects and supervisors:

📋 Browse Available Projects: The BTR Office maintains a list of projects that supervisors have posted. While finding a project is your responsibility, this can be a helpful starting point.
Browse Potential Projects

Step 3: Where Will You Do Your BTR?

Important Distinction:
External BTR means doing your thesis at an institution that is NOT a partner with Maastricht University.

UM Partners include: AMIBM, M4I, Brightlands, SRAL, other UM faculties (FHML, FASoS, SBE, FPN, Law)

If you're going to a different institution or university, this is considered external.

Choose Your BTR Location Type:

🌍 External BTR

Outside UM partner institutions

🏛️ Internal BTR

MSP or UM partner institutions

Step 4: Submit Your Request to Start

Once you have your supervisor and topic confirmed, it's time to officially request to start your BTR.

📍 Submit via Collent: All Request to Start applications must be submitted through the Collent platform.
Go to Collent BTR Portal

What You Need to Submit:

1️⃣ Proof of Correspondence with Research Supervisor

Email from your Research Supervisor that must include:

  • Your name
  • Title of your thesis
  • Start and end date (e.g., "September 2026 - January 2027" or "February 2026 - June 2026")
  • Statement that they agree to be your supervisor
⚠️ Important: This email should be sent from your supervisor's university/institutional email account. If the email is not sufficient, your thesis will not be approved.

Example Email:

Subject: Proof of correspondence BTR request application

Dear BTR Office,

I hereby confirm that [Student Name] was accepted for the following BTR project under my supervision:

Title: "Studying molecular processes to understand the differences in disease severity of COVID-19 patients"

Duration: September 1, 2026 – January 29, 2027

Best regards,
[Supervisor Name]

2️⃣ Brief Thesis Description (½ page, ~250 words)

Your description should include:

  • Background and context of the research
  • What you will investigate (research question)
  • Research methods/techniques you'll use
  • Why this research is important
⚠️ Important: Write this in your own words - do NOT copy/paste from your supervisor's research page, papers, or project descriptions.

Example Description:

Thesis Description

Cellular senescence is a state of irreversible proliferative arrest that can be triggered by various DNA-damaging stimuli (e.g., irradiation or oncogene induced). Cellular senescence is important because these cells accumulate with age, and they are associated with many age-related diseases. The cells that are in this state are metabolically active and can influence the environment around them through the senescence associated secretory phenotype. There are several morphological and biochemical hallmarks of senescence, however there is no consensus regarding the metabolic hallmarks and characteristics, because this is hard to obtain.

In silico computational models of cellular metabolism can be used to investigate cellular senescence, using the COnstraint Based Reconstruction and Analysis (COBRA) Toolbox in MATLAB. Several models have been developed and theses, but they are not perfect.

For my thesis I will be working with several methods to validate cellular senescence metabolic models, so that we would know if a tissue/condition-specific model shows biologically reasonable and correct behavior, based on what we know should happen from literature. I will be supervised by [Supervisor Name]. This thesis will be a continuation of the research done in my MSP Research Honors Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have 150+ credits but would still like to take an additional module. Is this possible?

Generally, you are only allowed to take an additional module alongside the BTR if you require it to fulfill the final graduation requirements (i.e., you have between 145-149 ECTS).

However, if you would like to do an additional module for other reasons (for example, master's program applications or personal interest), you can still request to do an additional module by submitting the form through the Intranet.

Important: Approval is at the Board of Examiners' discretion. You will need to provide strong motivation for why the additional module is necessary, and there is no guarantee it will be approved if you already have 150+ ECTS.

Submit Additional Module Request
Can my supervisor be someone without a PhD?

The Research Supervisor (the person with final responsibility for your BTR) must have a PhD or be able to prove their expertise in the field to the BTR Office.

However, you may have a day-to-day supervisor who does not have a PhD or is a PhD student. This person can guide your daily work in the lab, but they cannot be your official Research Supervisor.

If you have questions about your specific supervision arrangement, please contact the BTR Office: msp-btr@maastrichtuniversity.nl

What if I need to change my topic after approval?

Minor adjustments to your research topic during the BTR are normal and expected as your project develops. However, if you need to make a major change to your topic or switch supervisors, you must:

  • Discuss with your current Research Supervisor and Internal Advisor
  • Email the BTR Office with justification: msp-btr@maastrichtuniversity.nl
  • Receive approval before making any changes

Major changes may affect your timeline and graduation date.

Can I do my BTR part-time while taking courses?

No more than ONE module (maximum 5 ECTS) may be taken during the BTR.

The BTR is designed as a full-time commitment (30 ECTS). The only exception is if you have between 145-149 ECTS and need an additional module to reach 180 ECTS for graduation.

Taking an additional module requires approval via the Intranet form (which includes approval from your Research Supervisor and the Board of Examiners), and your BTR must be done in Maastricht.

What if my grades come in after the RTS deadline?

You can submit your Request to Start with courses still under grading, as long as:

  • Maximum 12.5 ECTS of courses AND a Project Period may be under grading
  • You will reach at least 145 ECTS once those grades come in

Your BTR approval will be provisional until those grades are confirmed. If you do not reach 145 ECTS, your BTR approval will be revoked.

What is the minimum GPA to go abroad?

You need a nominal GPA of 7.5 to do your BTR abroad.

If you have slightly less than 7.5, please contact the BTR Office to discuss your situation: msp-btr@maastrichtuniversity.nl

My BTR institution requires me to sign an NDA. What do I do?

If the institution provides an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), forward it to the BTR Office and we will have it reviewed by the legal team and signed.

Send the NDA to: msp-btr@maastrichtuniversity.nl

⏰ Important: Submit NDAs well in advance of your BTR start date to allow time for legal review and processing.
